SMOKESTACK at MAGNOLIA BREWING COMPANY | Dogpatch, SF

Smokestack at Magnolia Brewing is a one-of-a-kind brewpub and barbecue joint tucked into a shiny new brewery in San Francisco’s post-industrial Dogpatch neighborhood. The building was originally a factory owned by the American Can Company, the corporation that manufactured the world’s first beer can.

Nothing Something created a space with a life & story of its own that intersects with the community and its history. It's not something that can be drawn; it's more a feeling than a design. The result is spectacular: Not the concept of time; not a decorative pastiche -- just a surprising encountering of a richly detailed moment.

The stunning 1930's decor is a highly textured game, a mystery that clues customers into the historic sweet spot that occurred for butchery and imbibing culture in America; a time before Supermarkets, as the country freed itself from the constraints of prohibition and rebounded from the great depression. Hints of this past life are everywhere -- informative pre-war newspapers are revealed behind wilting wallpaper ("BACON, 2-1/2 cents p/Lb") and a mysterious second floor door is labeled "DICTATING" - a reminder of a time before texts and emails.

The Nothing Something design philosophy is to design an encounter in time itself. Not the concept of time; not a decorative pastiche -- just a surprising encountering of a richly detailed moment.

Hospitality spaces tend to be designed within trends, planned digitally within architectural software constraints and handed to a construction team. Creating an encountered moment required burying the existence of computerized design technology beneath organic, time-worn detail. Nothing Something used their many digital tools as a framework, but then reacted to color and shape in real time, designing, fabricating and inventing for each opportunity.

The Smokestack experience transports guests to another time & place. It hides formatting, using subtle seam detail in the flooring to lead guests about the environment. It avoids genre and trend and makes use of a surprisingly gentle palette. Every aspect presents intriguing detail and texture, all presented as dots to be connected. The result is an elegant, well-worn classic, exciting yet familiar, and always rewarding for those who discover it.
